North America mixes national parks and big cities in the north with rainforest, volcano country and beaches in Central America, and island hopping in the Caribbean.

The three large countries suit road trips, while the Caribbean works best when you pick one or two islands and stay put. Choose the region first, then compare countries.

Planning a trip to North America

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center, so check forecasts if you travel to the Caribbean or the Gulf coast in those months.

Entry rules depend on your passport, and some countries ask for a visa before you arrive, so check each country's official government site. Before you book, read the U.S. State Department travel advisories and the CDC Travelers' Health pages for the places you plan to visit. Rules for crossing a land border can differ from rules for arriving by air.
