Azerbaijan: Where Fire Meets Silk Road Splendor
Where East meets West on the Caspian Sea, with fire temples, a stunning Old City, Silk Road history, and Caucasian mountain landscapes.
Azerbaijan is situated in the South Caucasus at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bordered by Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, Iran to the south, and the Caspian Sea to the east. It has a varied geography of Caucasus mountain highlands in the north, a central lowland corridor along the Kura River, and the semi-arid Gobustan plateau to the south.
Azerbaijan is known as the “Land of Fire,” reflecting both the natural gas seeps that have been burning for millennia and the country’s ancient Zoroastrian tradition of fire worship. The country has been shaped by Persian, Turkic, Russian, and Soviet influences over centuries, and Baku’s architecture reflects this layered history in dramatic and beautiful ways.
Why Visit Azerbaijan
Baku is the most immediately striking reason to visit. The city has one of the most dramatic architectural contrasts in the world: the Icherisheher (Inner City), a UNESCO World Heritage Site with medieval walls, the 12th-century Palace of the Shirvanshahs, and the mysterious Maiden Tower, stands literally in the shadow of the Flame Towers, three enormous modern skyscrapers shaped like flames that dominate the skyline and are illuminated at night in constantly shifting fire and colour patterns.
Walking from the narrow streets of the old walled city to the sleek waterfront promenade and the modern glass buildings beyond is a genuinely striking urban experience.
The Gobustan National Park south of Baku is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with two extraordinary features. The first is one of the largest concentrations of prehistoric rock art in the world, with thousands of carvings and paintings on rocks and cliff faces depicting animals, human figures, hunting scenes, and boats dating back 40,000 years.
The second is a field of mud volcanoes, cold grey craters that bubble slowly or occasionally erupt with mud, creating a landscape that is simultaneously bizarre and fascinating.
Top Places to Visit Azerbaijan
1. Baku
Beyond the contrast of old and new, Baku has the Heydar Aliyev Center, a flowing white building designed by Zaha Hadid that has become an architectural landmark. The Baku boulevard along the Caspian seafront is a pleasant promenade. The old city bazaar has carpets, antiques, and traditional crafts.
2. Sheki
The historic town of Sheki in the northwestern foothills is one of the most beautiful in Azerbaijan. The Khan’s Summer Palace, built in the 18th century without a single nail, is decorated with extraordinary stained glass shebeke windows and intricate painted murals. The town has a well-preserved caravanserai, a historic khan’s winter palace, and good traditional crafts including silk weaving.
3. Lahij
A small mountain village accessible by road from Sheki, Lahij is famous for its copper craftsmanship and its well-preserved medieval cobblestone streets. It is one of the few places in Azerbaijan where the traditional Udi language is still spoken.
4. Nakhchivan
The exclave of Nakhchivan, separated from the main body of Azerbaijan by Armenian territory, has significant historical sites including the Momine Khatun Mausoleum (a 12th-century octagonal tower considered a masterpiece of Islamic architecture), the Alinja Fortress perched on a mountain crag, and caves where Neolithic humans lived.
Azerbaijani Food and Culture
Azerbaijani cuisine is a rich blend of Central Asian, Persian, and Caucasian traditions. Plov (pilaf) has hundreds of variations in Azerbaijan, more than in any other country in the region.
Shah plov, served in a pastry crust (gazmag), is the most ceremonial version. Dolma (stuffed vegetables or grape leaves), kebabs, lavangi (chicken or fish stuffed with walnut and herb paste), and dushbara (tiny dumplings in broth) are all excellent.
Travel Tip for Azerbaijan
Citizens of many countries can get an e-visa online (ASAN Visa). The Azerbaijani manat is the currency. Azerbaijani and Russian are widely spoken. English is becoming more common in Baku. The best time to visit Baku is April to June and September to October. Sheki and the mountains are beautiful in spring and autumn.
