Nepal: Where Mountains Touch the Sky and Adventure Begins
The Himalayas, the birthplace of Buddha, and some of the world’s greatest trekking routes in a small country of extraordinary beauty and warmth.
Nepal is a landlocked country wedged between India to the south and China to the north, in the heart of the Himalayas. It is home to eight of the world’s ten highest mountains, including Everest, the highest point on earth at 8,849 meters. It is also the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, born in Lumbini in the Terai lowlands. For its small size, Nepal carries an almost implausible concentration of natural and cultural significance.
Nepal is one of the world’s great trekking destinations, and the trekking industry has been the foundation of its tourism economy for decades. But Nepal is much more than trekking. The Kathmandu Valley, with three UNESCO-listed cities within a few kilometers of each other, has one of the densest concentrations of cultural heritage sites in Asia. The wildlife of the Terai, including tigers and rhinoceros, is protected in parks that receive far less attention than the mountain regions.
Why Visit Nepal
Trekking in Nepal ranges from half-day hikes from Kathmandu to the multi-week challenge of the Everest Base Camp trek or the Annapurna Circuit. The EBC trek, which takes about 12 to 14 days from Lukla to Base Camp and back, offers views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and dozens of other peaks along with an immersion in Sherpa culture that is unlike any other trekking experience in the world.
The Annapurna Circuit, which circles the Annapurna massif in roughly 15 to 20 days, passes through an extraordinary range of landscapes, from subtropical forests to the rain shadow desert of the Mustang region.
The Kathmandu Valley is a cultural experience of the highest order. Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world, surrounded by Tibetan monasteries and prayer flags, is a place of genuine spiritual intensity.
Pashupatinath Temple on the banks of the Bagmati River is the most important Hindu temple in Nepal, where cremations on the ghats echo the rituals of Varanasi in India. The medieval city of Bhaktapur has some of the finest traditional Newari architecture in the region.
Top Places to Visit in Nepal
1. Kathmandu
The capital has Thamel, the backpacker hub with gear shops, restaurants, and a concentrated tourist infrastructure. But the real Kathmandu is in Durbar Square, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and the old neighborhoods of Patan and Bhaktapur, where UNESCO-listed palaces, temples, and courtyards give a sense of the Newari civilization that has shaped the valley for centuries.
2. Pokhara
The second largest city sits on a lake with the Annapurna range reflecting in the water on clear days. It is the starting point for Annapurna trekking and has a pleasant lakeside atmosphere with good restaurants and accommodation. Paragliding over the lake with the mountains behind you is one of Nepal’s best experiences.
3. Chitwan National Park
In the Terai lowlands, Chitwan is Nepal’s finest wildlife destination. One-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, elephants, gharial crocodiles, and over 500 bird species live in the park. Jeep safaris, elephant walks, and canoe trips on the Rapti River give different access to the wildlife.
4. Lumbini
The birthplace of Buddha in the western Terai is a peaceful pilgrimage site with an archaeological zone, meditation gardens, and Buddhist monasteries built by communities from across Asia.
Nepali Food and Culture
Dal bhat, a meal of lentil soup, rice, and curried vegetables, is the staple Nepali meal eaten twice a day across the country. In the mountains, trekkers eat it daily and discover it is more than sufficient. Momos, Tibetan-influenced steamed dumplings filled with meat or vegetables and served with a spiced tomato sauce, are excellent throughout the country.
Travel Tip for Nepal
Most nationalities get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at land borders. The Nepali rupee is the currency. Nepali is the official language. English is widely spoken in tourist areas. The best time to trek is October to November (post-monsoon, clear skies) and March to May (spring, rhododendrons in bloom). Altitude sickness is a serious concern on high-altitude treks and requires careful acclimatization.
