Thailand: The Land of Smiles and Endless Adventures
Tropical beaches, golden temples, excellent street food, and one of the most welcoming travel cultures in Southeast Asia.
Thailand is one of the most visited countries in Asia, and its popularity is well-earned. It sits in the heart of mainland Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south, with long coastlines on both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.
The country has exceptional tourism infrastructure, a low cost of living for most international visitors, extraordinary food, beautiful natural landscapes, and a culture that is genuinely welcoming.
Thailand manages to work simultaneously for backpackers spending very little, couples looking for beach luxury, families wanting cultural experiences, and food lovers chasing the best street food in the world. That range of appeal is genuinely unusual and is a significant part of why so many people return.
Why Visit Thailand
The food is where most conversations about Thailand start. Thai cuisine is one of the great food cultures in the world: complex, layered, intensely aromatic, and balanced between sweet, sour, salty, spicy, and savory in ways that feel both surprising and completely right.
Pad thai, green curry, massaman curry, tom yum soup, som tam papaya salad, mango sticky rice. These dishes are famous worldwide but they taste completely different in Thailand, where the ingredients are fresh and the cooking is done at speed over fierce heat in ways that cannot be replicated abroad.
The temples are the other defining experience. Thailand has over 40,000 Buddhist temples, and the finest of them are among the most beautiful religious structures in Southeast Asia. Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok, which houses the revered Emerald Buddha.
Wat Pho with its enormous reclining Buddha. Chiang Mai’s Doi Suthep temple looking down over the city. Sukhothai’s ancient temple ruins spread across a peaceful historical park. The religious culture is alive and active, not a museum piece.
Top Places to Visit Thailand
1. Bangkok
Bangkok is one of the great cities of Asia. It is overwhelming at first: the traffic, the heat, the noise, the size. But once you find your footing, it is endlessly compelling. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are extraordinary.
The Chatuchak Weekend Market is one of the largest markets in the world. The street food along Yaowarat (Chinatown) and Silom is magnificent. The rooftop bars along the Chao Phraya river at sunset are among the most atmospheric in Asia.
2. Chiang Mai
In the cool northern highlands, Chiang Mai has a completely different character from Bangkok. The old walled city has dozens of temples and a thriving arts and crafts scene.
The surrounding mountains have trekking, elephant sanctuaries (choose ethical operators carefully), and hill tribe villages. The night markets are excellent.
3. The Islands
Thailand’s islands divide between the Gulf of Thailand side and the Andaman Sea side. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are the main Gulf islands, popular for different reasons including Full Moon Party, diving, and a more relaxed beach scene.
The Andaman side has Krabi, Koh Lanta, and the Phi Phi islands, with dramatic limestone karst scenery and excellent snorkeling and diving. Phuket is the most developed and has excellent infrastructure alongside its now-crowded beaches.
4. Sukhothai
Sukhothai was the first capital of the Thai kingdom in the 13th century. The historical park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves dozens of temple ruins in a peaceful landscape of lotus ponds and ancient trees.
Thai Food and Culture
Thai cuisine varies significantly by region. The north has milder curries influenced by Myanmar. The northeast (Isan) has a spicier, more rustic cuisine with influences from Laos. The south has some of the most fiery food in the country, with heavy coconut milk use. Bangkok blends all traditions.
Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country and Buddhist customs shape daily life. Temples are central to community life. Monks are a constant presence. Respect for religious sites, including covering shoulders and knees and removing shoes, is expected and appreciated.
Travel Tip for Thailand
Citizens of most Western countries can visit Thailand without a visa for stays of 30 to 60 days depending on nationality, with recent policy expansions increasing the permitted stay. The Thai baht is the currency. Thai is the official language.
English is widely spoken in tourist areas. The best time to visit most of Thailand is November to March, the cool dry season. The islands are best from December to April. The north is good year-round but particularly pleasant from October to February.
