South Africa
South Africa: A Land of Diversity and Heritage
One of Africa’s most visited countries, combining world-class cities, incredible wildlife, breathtaking coastal scenery, and a complex, fascinating history.
South Africa sits at the southern tip of the African continent, bordered by Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe to the north, Mozambique and Eswatini to the northeast, and surrounded by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans on its western and eastern coasts.
It is Africa’s most economically developed country and one of its most diverse, with 11 official languages and a population shaped by indigenous African, Dutch, British, Indian, Cape Malay, and other immigrant communities.
South Africa is not a simple destination. It has enormous beauty and enormous inequality. It has a traumatic history of apartheid and a complicated ongoing process of addressing its legacy. Traveling here with awareness of that context makes for a more meaningful experience than treating it simply as a backdrop for safaris and scenic drives.
Why Visit South Africa
Cape Town is consistently rated among the most beautiful cities in the world, and it earns that reputation. Table Mountain dominates the skyline and offers one of the most spectacular urban views anywhere when approached from the sea, from the highway, or from the top.
The Cape Peninsula below the city has dramatic coastal scenery, penguin colonies at Boulders Beach, and the Cape of Good Hope at its southern tip. The V&A Waterfront is one of the most pleasant waterfront developments in Africa. Bo-Kaap, the historic Cape Malay neighborhood with its brightly painted houses, adds color and cultural texture.
The Kruger National Park in the northeast is one of the most visited game reserves in Africa and one of the best organized. It covers nearly 20,000 square kilometers and supports the Big Five, as well as hundreds of bird species and an extraordinary variety of smaller mammals and reptiles. The network of camps and roads within the park means it is accessible to self-drive visitors as well as those on guided safaris, making it more affordable than many equivalent destinations.
The Garden Route along the southern Cape coast is one of the most scenic drives in the world. It runs through forests, past bays and beaches, through lagoons and small towns, from Mossel Bay to Storms River. Knysna Lagoon, Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness, and Tsitsikamma National Park are all highlights along the way.
The Winelands around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl produce some of the best wine in the Southern Hemisphere in a setting of Dutch-influenced gabled architecture and mountain scenery that is immediately beautiful. A day trip from Cape Town to taste Chenin Blanc and Pinotage in these valleys is one of the easiest and most enjoyable excursions in the country.
South African Food and Culture
South African food is a reflection of its diverse population. Braai, the South African style of barbecue, is a social institution that crosses racial and cultural lines and serves as a universal gathering point. Biltong, dried and cured meat, is a snack available everywhere. Boerewors, a spiced sausage cooked over coals, is central to any proper braai. Cape Malay cuisine, with its combination of Malay spices and Dutch cooking traditions, produces dishes like bobotie (a spiced minced meat bake) that are genuinely distinctive.
The country’s music scene is vibrant and varied, from township jazz to Afrikaans rock to kwaito and gqom electronic music. The District Six Museum in Cape Town and the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg are among the most important museums on the continent for understanding the country’s recent history.
