Algeria: A Rich Cultural Heritage
Algeria is the largest country in Africa by land area, and one of the most diverse in terms of landscape. Its northern coastline runs along the Mediterranean Sea, offering a mild climate and a string of cities shaped by Berber, Arab, Ottoman, and French influences. Moving south from the coast, the land rises into the Atlas Mountains before giving way to one of the most dramatic desert landscapes on earth: the Sahara.
Most international travelers have only a vague sense of Algeria, if any at all. That is changing, but slowly. And that means right now, Algeria is one of the few places in North Africa where you can visit world-class historical sites and ancient ruins without being surrounded by tour groups. If you are the kind of traveler who prefers discovery to a crowd, Algeria is worth paying serious attention to.
Why Visit Algeria
Algeria’s history is one of the most layered in the world. Prehistoric humans left behind some of the most important rock art ever discovered, carved into the sandstone plateaus of Tassili n’Ajjer in the deep southeast. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains tens of thousands of engravings and paintings that date back as far as 10,000 years.
The Romans built extensively in North Africa, and Algeria has two of the best-preserved Roman cities anywhere in the world. Timgad, founded by Emperor Trajan in 100 AD, is often called the “Pompeii of North Africa” because of how completely its street grid has survived. Djemila, a mountain site with temples, basilicas, and a triumphal arch, is equally impressive and even less visited.
Algeria’s Islamic heritage is visible in the historic medinas of Algiers, Tlemcen, and Constantine. The Casbah of Algiers is a UNESCO-listed old city built on a steep hillside, with narrow winding streets, crumbling Ottoman-era mansions, and a history that stretches back more than 1,000 years. Tlemcen was the capital of a medieval Muslim empire and still has some of the most beautiful Andalusian-influenced architecture in the Arab world.
And then there is the Sahara. Algeria’s portion of the desert includes some of its most spectacular parts. The Grand Erg Occidental and Grand Erg Oriental are vast seas of sand dunes that stretch for hundreds of kilometers. The Ahaggar Mountains in the deep south rise dramatically from the desert floor, with ancient rock formations and an otherworldly quality that has drawn explorers and artists for generations.
Top Places to Visit in Algeria
Algiers is the capital and the most obvious starting point. The Casbah district, the French colonial seafront, the vibrant street life, and the National Museum of Antiquities give you a solid introduction to the country’s layered identity.
Timgad and Djemila are both within a few hours of Algiers or the nearby city of Constantine and should be on the itinerary of anyone with an interest in Roman history.
Ghardaia is the capital of the M’zab Valley, a UNESCO site that preserves an extraordinary medieval Islamic city-state. The five fortified towns here were built by the Mozabite Berber people more than a thousand years ago and are still inhabited and functioning today.
Tamanrasset is the gateway to the Ahaggar highlands and the southern Sahara. From here, travelers can reach the Assekrem plateau, where Charles de Foucauld built a hermitage in the early 20th century and where the sunrise over the desert is one of the most striking views in the world.
Practical Travel Tips for Algeria
Most visitors need a visa to enter Algeria, and the process can be slow. Apply well in advance and check the current requirements for your nationality. Tourist facilities are limited outside the main cities, and independent travel in the south requires preparation and often a local guide.
The best time to visit is from October to April, when temperatures are manageable across the country. The Sahara is extremely hot from May to September. Algeria uses the Algerian dinar. Credit cards are not widely accepted, and cash is essential. French and Arabic are both widely spoken.
